Tension Headaches
Tension Headaches are a very common form of headache that presents to the clinic for treatment. Often people say they have a tension headache when they have a different headache presentation. However, it is very common that people will state they have a migraine, when they are experiencing a tension headache. A tension type headache is a primary form of headache, that is largely thought to be the result of referral from the muscles and joints in the head/neck and jaw.
Individuals with a tension headache will experience a band-like distribution across the forehead, which feels vice like. This form of headache does not typically have symptoms of nausea, vomiting or sensitivity to light. The headache can last hours to days (even occur daily), with it often aggravated or is potentially caused by stress. These headaches are not severe in nature and present with a mild to moderate intensity.
Your osteopath will examine you to identify where the headache is coming from and what lifestyle factors are influencing the headache presentation. High stress, teeth clenching, prolonged sitting, and poor sleep have been known to influence a tension headache. Manual therapy through osteopathic skills has been shown to be a good management strategy for tension headache presentations.
