Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain and back pain in general is known to be a large burden to the population. In fact lower back pain is the leading cause of disability burden in Australia! Back pain can be from multiple causes and sometimes when an acute flare up hits, it can be very emotional and significantly affect your ability to function. Why is lower back pain such a burden to the population? Well research has shown it is due to far too much low value care (Buchbinder et al 2018, Foster et al 2018, Hartvigsen et al 2018). What is low value care? Well firstly, poor education that causes unnecessary fear. Over reliance on imaging when it is largely not needed, pain medications overuse, unnecessary surgeries and an over-reliance on passive therapies (like massage).
Lower back pain in particular is a frequent presentation into the clinic. Everyone has their own story with their pain and how it affects them. At The Reform Lab Osteopathy we will listen and tailor our examination and treatment to your individual goals and needs. High value care really is a practitioner who listens, reassures, validates, educates and builds confidence in movement/promotes physical activity. At The Reform Lab Osteopathy, we share you in the decision making process. In the treatment options section below, you will see we have listed ‘Exercise Rehabilitation & Movement Optimism in bold. The evidence supports this approach favourably and as such it will be discussed with you in the treatment decision making process.
It is important to note that most back pain is not due to a serious cause. We will examine thoroughly to ensure you get an appropriate diagnosis and have a full understanding of how we can help you.
